Short days, long shadows and the best colour of the year. I spent a week driving along the coast with two bodies and far too much film. The light after four o'clock does most of the work; my job was mostly to stop the car in time.

A small kitchen is enough for black and white. The trick is order: chemistry mixed the night before, everything at room temperature, and a towel on the floor for the inevitable drip.

The old harbour is busiest at dawn, when the boats come in and nobody pays attention to a person with a camera. Ropes, nets, gulls and very honest faces.
